Not only about the love between men and women,
but in a much more universal sense
- about the sensuality of the mechanism of the universe...
about life.
Tōru Takemitsu: Rain Tree Sketch I (1982)
Although I am basically self taught,
I consider Debussy my teacher
- the most important elements are
colour, light and shadow.

Music should be able to invoke the natural emotions in all human beings.
Music is not notes fixed on apiece of paper.

from "Sculpting in Time"
(A. Tarkovsky, tr. by Kitty Hunter-Blair), pp202-203:
"How could I have imagined as I was making NOSTALGHIA that the stifling sense of longing that fills the screen space of that film was to become my lot for the rest of my life; that from now until the end of my days I would bear the painful malady within myself?"
"Gorchakov, the protagonist of NOSTALGHIA, is a poet. He comes to Italy to collect material on the Russian serf composer, Beryozovsky, on whose life he is basing an opera libretto. Beryozovsky is an historical figure. he showed such musical ability that he was sent by his landowner to study in Italy, where he stayed many years, gave concerts and was much acclaimed. But in the end, driven no doubt by that same inescapable Russian nostalgia, he eventually deciced to return to serf-owning Russia, where, shortly afterwards, he hanged himself."

I probably belong to a type of composer of songs who keeps thinking about melody...
I am old fashioned.
